Silence amplifies stress: audio calms it
Is silence in a wellness space really ideal?
Many establishment managers think that silence is the hallmark of luxury and tranquility. However, studies in environmental psychology show the opposite.
Why silence is not neutral
In an enclosed space, silence doesn’t really exist. There are always noises: ventilation, air conditioning, footsteps in the corridor, whispers at reception, running water.
In the absence of background music, these noises suddenly become noticeable. The client’s brain processes them one by one, without a filter. The result: a slight but permanent tension that prevents complete relaxation. This is what is known as “silence stress”: the human ear, deprived of a coherent sound signal, goes on alert.
Music as a safety signal
A professional sound environment acts as a safety signal for the brain. It tells it: “you are in a controlled space, you can relax.”
Music masks background noise without drawing attention. It creates a predictable acoustic environment, where the brain no longer has to analyze every sound. This is why the most renowned spas all use a sound signature. This is no coincidence.
What volume to avoid stress?
The ideal volume is just below the threshold of conscious attention. Present enough to mask background noise. Low enough not to interfere with conversation.
A good rule of thumb: if your clients can speak in a low voice without straining, the volume is right. If a client tells you “it’s too quiet in here,” then the sound environment is not suitable.
